Christmas in Tulum means warm days, a calm Caribbean and a holiday dinner by the pool instead of by the fireplace. If you are bringing the whole family or a big group of friends, the hard part is not the weather. It is keeping everyone together. Here is what to expect this December and how to plan it.
When is the holiday peak in Tulum?
The busiest stretch of the year runs from about December 20 to January 5. Flights, transfers and popular restaurants fill up weeks ahead, so lock in the essentials early. Arriving a few days before December 20, or staying into January, gives you the same weather with fewer crowds. We explain why in our guide to November and December in Tulum.
What is the weather like at Christmas?
December is one of Tulum’s driest months, with about 78 mm (3 in) of rain on average. Daytime highs sit around 31 °C (88 °F) and nights around 25 °C (77 °F). The sea stays around 25–27 °C (77–80 °F), warm enough for long swims. Pack a light layer for breezy evenings.
Sargassum usually eases as winter sets in, but it varies from year to year. Check the latest report a few days before you fly, and read our sargassum guide.
How Mexico celebrates: dates worth knowing
- December 12, Virgen de Guadalupe: one of Mexico’s biggest religious holidays, with torch runners, music and food in town.
- December 16–24, Las Posadas: nine nights of gatherings with piñatas and hot ponche, a warm fruit punch.
- December 24, Nochebuena: the main celebration. Families share a late dinner, traditionally around 10 pm. Classic dishes include bacalao, romeritos and ponche; on the Yucatán Peninsula, cochinita pibil is a favorite.
- December 28, Día de los Santos Inocentes: Mexico’s version of April Fools’ Day.
- January 6, Día de Reyes: families share a rosca de reyes, a sweet bread with a small figurine hidden inside.
In December 2025, the town opened a Villa Navideña with lights, nativity scenes and a holiday parade in the main square. The 2026 dates have not been announced yet, so check the municipality’s social media before your trip.
Why a villa works better than hotel rooms at Christmas
- Everyone together. Our eight villas sit side by side in one condominium, each with four bedrooms and four bathrooms. Villa Selva sleeps up to 16 guests, and two villas side by side host up to 24.
- Your own Christmas table. Every villa has a fully equipped kitchen. Our concierge can book a private chef for Nochebuena, so nobody spends the evening cooking.
- A private pool for the kids, while the adults relax on the terrace.
- Simple logistics. Final cleaning is included. The beach is 5 minutes away by bike, and Tulum International Airport is about 35 minutes by car.
- A better price per person. Hotel rates climb sharply over the holidays. Splitting one villa across a family usually costs less per person; see how much a Tulum trip really costs.

Good to know before you book
- House rules for celebrations: music is welcome until 11 pm with the villa speakers, at a reasonable volume. The condominium is residential, so DJs and sound systems are not allowed. For a late night out, we can help organize a private party at a bar.
- Book transfers early. Taxis are hard to find on the busiest nights, especially New Year’s Eve. Planning that night too? Read our New Year’s Eve villa guide.
- Flying in? Compare options in Tulum airport vs Cancún airport.
- How booking direct works: a 20% deposit locks your dates and the balance is paid on arrival. We accept cash, card and bank transfer.
